Psalm 50: The Return of the Divine King!

                       1. The Brightness of His Coming!                  Psalm 50:1-4

Text: “Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.”  Psalm 50:2.

Good morning, patiently waiting Christian!  It is well nigh over two thousand years that the Church of the Living Lord Jesus Christ has been patiently waiting for His promised return to catch us away to be with Him forever.  Long has been the dark night of our waiting.  Patient has been our praying and serving and waiting for the Master’s return to this earth; as sin and darkness increases and open apostasy spreads like a cancer throughout the professing church worldwide.

“...Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall He find faith on the earth?”   (Luke 18:8)

I am convinced that, here in the 21st Century, we are actually watching the ‘Great Falling Away’; the increased apostasy, and ‘easy-believism’ of the Christian church worldwide; the diminishing of love for Christ Jesus, and the rise of a more militant anti-Christian spirit.

“And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.  And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.  And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many (professing Christians!) shall wax cold.  But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”  (Matthew 24:10-13)

It is into this well prophesied world of increasing darkness and unbelief that the Lord Jesus Christ shall make His glorious and terrible return.  The Psalmist looks forward and prophesies this truly awesome 2nd Advent of the Living Lord Jesus.

“Title: ‘A Psalm of Asaph.’  This is the first of the Psalms of Asaph, but whether it was the production of that eminent musician, or merely dedicated to him, we cannot tell.  The titles of twelve Psalms bear his name, but it could not in all of them be meant to ascribe their authorship to him, for several of these Psalms are of too late a date to have been composed by the same writer as the others.”  (C.H. Spurgeon, Treasury of David, page 231)

One thing genuine Bible-studying Christians can be certain of, is the fact that, God the Holy Spirit being the Divine Author of all 66 Books of canonical Scripture is the One God-breathed inspiration of each Psalm retained in our present King James Version Bible.

“All Scripture is given by inspiration (breath of God) of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man/woman of God may be perfect (mature), thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”  (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Verse 1. “The mighty God, even the Lord (Jehovah) hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.”  The inspired Psalmist, no matter who he is, writing under the inspiration of God the Spirit, is very clear on exactly Who is speaking the words contained in this glorious Psalm.  The Creator Lord God declares His truth to every corner of this fallen world of sin and disobedience.  There can be absolutely no excuse given by reprobate (rejected) souls that they never heard the Word of Almighty God.

“For His eyes are upon the ways of man, and He seeth all his goings.  There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.”  (Job 34:21-22)

Verse 2. “Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.  Moreover, he may be said to shine out of Zion because the Gospel, which set up spiritual worship, was to go forth from Mount Zion (Isaiah 2:4)  Micah 4:2); and the preachers of it were to begin at Jerusalem (Luke 24:47), and Christians are said to come unto Mount Zion, to receive their instructions, Hebrews 12:22, Hebrews 12:28).

"Zion is here called the perfection of beauty, because it was the holy hill; and holiness is indeed the perfection of beauty. That he shall come, and not keep silence, shall no longer seem to wink at the sins of men, as he had done (V.21)), but shall show his displeasure at them, and shall also cause that mystery to be published to the world by his holy apostles which had long lain hid, that the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs (Ephesians 3:5-6) ) and that the partition-wall of the ceremonial law should be taken down; this shall now no longer be concealed.

"In the great day, our God shall come and shall not keep silence, but shall make those to hear his judgment that would not hearken to his law. That his appearance should be very majestic and terrible: A fire shall devour before him. The fire of his judgments shall make way for the rebukes of his word, in order to the awakening of the hypocritical nation of the Jews, that the sinners in Zion, being afraid of that devouring fire (Isaiah 33:14), might be startled out of their sins.”  (Commentary of the Whole Bible by Matthew Henry 1662-1714)

Verse 3. “Our God shall come!  May our God come!  A prayer for the hastening of His advent, as in the Apocalypse (Revelation 22:20) (Pool’s Synopsis, Matthew Pool 1624-1679)

In this increasingly apostate age, true regenerate, Bible-believing Christians cry out as one, “Even so, Come Lord Jesus!”  (Revelation 22:20)

Verse 3.  “And shall not keep silence...” Our long-suffering Holy Lord God has sat on His Heavenly Throne for thousands of years, watching His fallen creatures failing, falling, and completely faltering in disobedience to His clear Commandments given to Moses on that Holy Hill.  (Exodus 20:1017)  Soon, and very soon, the Heavens shall suddenly open up and our God shall come, and He shall not keep silence.

“But as the days of Noah were (dark and sinful days), so shall also the coming of the Son of man (Christ Jesus) be.  For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be...Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.” (Matthew 24:37-42)

The time of our Holy Lord’s suffering in silence at the gross sins of this vile world will be over forever.  “...He will descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God:”  (1 Thessalonians 4:16)  For those still living in unbelief and disobedient sin – that shout of the Living Lord Jesus will be the shout of “TOO LATE!”  Their doom will be Eternally sealed.  There will be no more chance to be saved from Hell.  What a sad day of profound mourning that will be for those left behind on this earth.

Verse 3&4.  “ A fire shall devour before Him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about Him, He shall call to the Heavens from Above, and to the earth, that He may judge His people.

Thought: Will the brightness of Christ’s coming be a joy to your heart, or a terror to your soul?  Only the redeemed of God can cry out in joy at His soon appearing.
